Diggnation & 3 Awesome Things!

Posted by Stu Helm on October 11, 2008 – 3:35 pm

Dee-Eye-Double-Gee-dot-com! What an amazing night, for those of you who don’t follow my Twitter I went down to London to the Future of Web Apps Expo to go and watch the live Diggnation with my friends Lewis King, Chris Leydon and Jack Moore.

It was a great show, Kevin Rose & Alex Albrecht rocked the Excel centre, some wonderful one-liners and the coolness of Alex announcing his engagement to his long time girlfriend Heather, congratulations guys!

I’ll be posting some video / photos of the whole thing, but I wanted to tell you about three, yes three, awesome things that have happened since I got back from Diggnation.

1. Unexpected Cheque

I got back home, after a longer than usual train journey (trusty MacBook Pro kept me sane thankfully) at around 3am this morning, I’d looked at the mail before I left for the train the previous morning but nothing had arrived. What I found was a hand written envelope containing a cheque for £50, it turns out it was from some video work I did several months ago but never thought I’d actaully get paid for. This coverred the cost of my Diggnation trip exactly, which was fantastic timing!

2. Calls May Be Recorded

As you already know from my previous post, I work in a call centre and part of my job is to sell our products to customers are part of the customer service we give. With the current credit-crunch it’s quite a challenge to sell products, but we try our best of course, well it turns out that while I was chugging along on the train to London my team were listening to one of my calls, my manager told me in my monthly 1:1 meeting today.

They were doing some discussion of the sales process and I had been flagged up because of what they called an exceptionally good attempt to sell a credit card, so the team listened back and all were incredibly positive about it, I got a lot of praise from my manager and the team today, which really lifted my spirits.

3. The Calacanis Tweet

OK, I’m a huge chicken, coming out of Diggnation last night I saw and even walked past the infamous Jason Calacanis of Mahalo and TechCrunch fame, I really wanted to say hi, but my nerves got the better of me (something Chris will nerver let me forget I’m sure) and I didn’t take the plunge.

So I resorted to my safety net of Twitter and sent out :

@JasonCalacanis saw you at Diggnation, was too nervous to come and say hi, I was the fat git with the TWiT fleece on

I checked  my Tweets on my break at work this morning, surprisingly I was wide awake, and I find this reply form the man himself

@stuhelm next time just come up and give me a huge hug and buy me a drink mate!!!!

I have to say I was a little overwhelmed, I guess I don’t do the whole famous Twitter people thing too well, but it certainly made the shift more enjoyable.
